Leo Anthony Hosenfeld

January 13, 1935 — September 4, 2017

Leo Hosenfeld, born in Rochester, NY on January 13, 1935, passed away at home with family in Albuquerque, NM on Monday, September 4, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo G. and Gertrude Hosenfeld; and by his sister and brother-in-law, Molly and Dave Curtain. Leo is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Pete; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Anika; granddaughter, Elsa; sister, Barbara Clay of Wolfsborough, NH; and many nieces and nephews.

Leo was a graduate and ROTC member of Syracuse University (1957) and went to Graduate School at the University of New Mexico (1972). He was a Santa Fe Public School History teacher. Leo retired from the Federal Bureau of Land Management after 22 years. He was also a very talented handyman and contractor for over 40 years.

Leo was a Charter Member of the Hondo Volunteer Fire Department in Santa Fe; helped build Station One in 1975 and assisted with the construction of Station Two in 1986. He was especially proud to serve for 29 years with Habitat for Humanity in Santa Fe, where he was Team Captain for Los Alamos, Espanola, and Albuquerque. For Habitat in Albuquerque he was as an original member of the Albuquerque SWAT since 2003, which was unique to Albuquerque. He helped set up the first Albuquerque Restore on San Mateo Street, worked on dozens of homes, and was a member of the building committee right up until 2016. As part of International Habitat for Humanity he was a member of the “39 Amigos” building homes in Guatemala.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Habitat for Humanity, 4900 Menaul Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110 or the Hondo Fire Department, 21 Seton Village Road, Santa Fe, NM 87502 are welcomed and encouraged.

A Mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 22, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Annunciation Parish, 2621 Vermont St. NE, Albuquerque, NM.
