Karl Alan Nelson passed away peacefully at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Thursday, January 22. He was born on July 15, 1962, in Los Angeles, California, to Betty and Richard Nelson, and was the oldest of five boys-a role he carried with strength, humor, and a big heart.

His family later moved to Las Cruces, where he formed friendships that would last a lifetime and attended Mayfield High School. They eventually relocated to Albuquerque, where he graduated from Highland High School. Wherever Karl went, he built deep connections, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Karl was married once to Jolene Dickey and was a proud father of his only daughter, Hanna Nelson. Being a dad was one of his greatest joys and his most cherished roles. He was endlessly proud of his daughter and loved her deeply and unconditionally. His love was constant and evident in everything he did. Hanna was his heart, and fatherhood defined so much of who he was.

Karl had an extraordinary ability to make people feel seen, welcomed, and loved. Friends often became family in his world, and he cared for others as if they were his own. He was hardworking, loyal, and full of life. His laughter was infectious, his smile unforgettable, and his presence unmistakable. When Karl walked into a room, it felt brighter-lighter-better. Time spent with him was always meaningful, always fun, and always left you with a story you'd carry forever.

In his younger years, Karl worked as a bartender, a role perfectly suited to his energy and charm. Later, he joined the union and proudly learned the trade alongside his father. He continued to grow in his career, earning certifications and expanding his knowledge, always striving to do better-not just for himself, but for those around him. He took pride in his work and in the life he built.

Outside of work, Karl embraced life fully. He loved music and playing the guitar, golfing, skiing, working out, and-most of all-being with his friends and family. No matter how busy life became, Karl always showed up. He was there for the games, the shows, the races, and the milestones. You could count on him to stand beside you, to cheer you on, and to have your back.

Karl leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, loyalty, and unforgettable memories. He was a wonderful father, a devoted friend, and a light in the lives of so many. He was deeply loved, and he always will be. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held at Citizen Church North on March 7th, 2026 at 10 am.
