June, the second oldest of six children, was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Nyle and Callie Lockwood. She lived in Rudy, AR as a small child but her family later moved to Roland, OK where she spent the remainder of her childhood. June always assumed responsibility for hard work around the farm, milking cows, picking strawberries, churning butter, looking out for her brothers, and helping her Mom and Dad in any way possible. This work ethic continued throughout her entire life.
In 1943 she met William (Bill) Johnson at a USO dance and they married in 1946, after he returned from his service in Europe with the US Army Air Corp. While living in California the two of them had a long-awaited son (Stan) in 1948. In 1952 the family moved to Albuquerque, NM and Bill continued his military service. For 33 years after that June was a trusted and valuable employee of the Safeway grocery chain. Even after retiring she continued to work hard at keeping a spotless home, a large garden, and enjoying her two grandchildren, Mark and Callie. She was able to welcome a great-grandson, Ethan, into the family just over three years ago.
It was only in the past few years that her energy flagged and she became unable to keep up her rigorous work and maintain her home. Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all those at Casa de Paz and La Luz Hospice who have been so wonderful during June’s last months and years.
She is survived by her brother, Warren Lockwood; several nieces and nephews; her son, Stan and his wife, Helen; granddaughter, Callie; grandson, Mark; and great-grandson, Ethan.
