Julie Altwies

February 22, 1958 — August 4, 2025

Julie Altwies passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, August 4, 2025. She is survived by her mother, Janet; her sisters, Jolene and Jane; her nieces and nephews, Allison and her husband, Jay, Abraham and his partner, Kaelyn, Hudson and Hazel; sister in law Mary; her daughter, Michelle, her grandchildren, Viviana and Ulysses; and her great-granddaughter, Ella; her sons, David and his spouse, Marie; and granddaughter, Tatiana. Julie also leaves behind many friends and colleagues that she loved.

She leaves behind a legacy of kindness. Julie served as Deputy District Attorney in charge of the Violent Crimes Unit in Bernalillo County. She was appointed and then elected as judge of the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court, and later became Chief Judge during which time she headed the nationally renowned DWI DRUG court for Bernalillo County. She spent her life fighting for and protecting the rights of victims of crime. She became close to many of the people she supported as the person fighting for justice for their loved ones. Julie officiated many marriages, including numerous marriages of people whose lives had been impacted by violent crimes. Those families grew to love and respect Julie for her hard work that she did on their behalf. Her compassion and tender-heart created bonds of loyalty and love, even under the saddest of circumstances.

Julie was an animal lover. She had a fierce love for her golden retrievers, Duke and Buddy. Big dog cuddles are happening now that they are all together. Julie doted on her many grand-doggies and cats. She always greeted her furry family members and gave out pats and kisses before moving on to her two-legged family!

Julie loved to give presents. She often showed up to family gatherings loaded down with gifts. She took great pleasure in seeing the happy looks and big hugs of thanks from her nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

In the spirit of Julie's generosity, donations can be made to Animal Humane Society and  Planned Parenthood.

Julie's memorial services will be announced on a later date.
