José Frutoso "Joe" Herrera, 95, of Albuquerque, New Mexico passed away on May 12, 2026. He was born on August 31, 1930, to the late Silviano and Beatrice Herrera in Taos, New Mexico and graduated from Taos High School. Mr. Herrera retired from the state treasurer's office in 1984 after 21 years of service. He also worked at Chamisa Bookshop in Albuquerque owned by his best friend, Rex Hopson.
José was deeply committed to his Catholic faith throughout his life and could often be found praying in the garden at his assisted living community.
Following his retirement, he volunteered as an usher at Popejoy Hall where he liked watching the shows. He enjoyed traveling with his friend Rex and visited over 50 countries during his lifetime. José Frutoso loved dogs and had many throughout his life. He read the newspaper daily and liked to share stories of his family and his own adventures including working at an ammunition depot in Nebraska during the Korean War.
José Frutoso is survived by nieces and nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Silviano Herrera and Beatrice Duran; sisters, Juliana and Carmelita "Nina"; and friend, Rex Hopson.
Services will be Friday, May 22, 2026, at Our Lady of Fatima, 4020 Lomas Blvd. NE in Albuquerque with a rosary at 9:00 a.m. and funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
