Jonathan David Sher, known to friends and loved ones as “Jon” and to many as “Dr. Sher,” passed away on the morning of Sunday, December 28, 2025. Jon was born on May 10, 1964 to Verna Nystrom-Sher and Larry Sher. Jon grew up with his loving parents in Albuquerque, NM along with siblings Debbie and Robert. As an adult, Jon made his way to Texas for studies at the University of Houston and graduated with a Doctor of Optometry in the spring of 1989. He married Cynthia Celeste Bottoms in a beautiful ceremony at the Tremont House in Galveston, TX on November 24, 1989. Jon and Cindy relocated to the Greater Dallas area shortly thereafter and Jon would live in that area for the rest of his years. Jon and Cindy’s beloved son Benjamin Emanuel Sher was born on December 12, 1998. Jon became well-known for being a skilled optometrist, but it was his kind and loving disposition that really defined him. As Jon’s mother once said, Jon was “for sure ‘a gift of God.’ He was and always has been a joy to…anyone that has been fortunate enough to know him.” In Jon’s personal life, he was an audiophile and maintained a broad and varied array of hobbies and interests including swimming, reading, F1 racing, hiking, playing pool, cooking, coin collecting, skiing, and more. Above all though, Jon was passionate about his family. He would often break into an endearing voice when talking with his wife Cindy and his eyes would beam with pride when discussing his son Ben. Jon regularly made time to have long conversations with friends and loved ones, and would gleefully plan excursions such as concerts, dinner parties, or visits with those whose company he enjoyed. There are no words great enough to describe the immeasurable loss to Jon’s loved ones following his passing. To those who are grieving, here are some of Jon’s words that may give some small measure of comfort:

“To all of the people in my life, family and friends who listen, who care, who forgive…Thank you…”

As Jon’s soul journeys onward, his body will be laid to rest in Albuquerque, NM.

Jon is survived by his wife Cynthia Celeste Sher, his son Benjamin Emanuel Sher, his mother Verna Sher, father Larry Sher, Stepmother Mary Jane Hicks, siblings Debbie Thomas and Robert Sher and many nieces and nephews in the Albuquerque and Denver area, and his beloved dog Reggie.

Jon is preceded in death by his grandparents on both sides, his stepfather Terry Lawson Fleharty, and pets Shadow Cali and Ladybug.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 2, 2026 - Fairview Memorial Park at 12:00pm.
