Jon "Mike" Hatchell, 84, of Albuquerque, New Mexico passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and family.
Mike was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and brother. He was born in San Antonio, Texas to the late Melvin and Frances Hatchell, moving to New Mexico six months later.
Mike served honorably in the United States Army and the New Mexico National Guard, retiring as a Major with more than twenty years of dedicated service. A courageous pilot, he flew assault helicopters during the Vietnam War in Cu Chi, Vietnam, earning the call signs "Hornet 26" and "Hornet 5" with the 116th Assault Helicopter Unit. His bravery and commitment to his country were recognized by all who served with him. He later received his Master's Degree from the Anderson School of Business at the University of New Mexico. He was well respected in the surrounding area for his expertise in commercial appraising and spent a number of years with Hatchell Brothers Construction. Mike's unwavering faith was evident in his service to both his country, his church, and his community. He was a member of Heights Christian Church for over forty years, where he served as an Elder, Life Group leader, Caraway Street team member, Daycare Board member, and in numerous other leadership roles. His faith was strong, he loved the Lord with all his heart, and loved sharing and teaching others about Christ. Mike also developed and led the Mark Twain Neighborhood Association.
Mike enjoyed remodeling projects, fly fishing, and hunting. But most of all, he loved his wife of sixty years, his sons, grandchildren and spending time with his family. His optimism and unwavering spirit were exemplified by his favorite phrase, "Just passing through".
He is preceded in death by his parents (Melvin and Frances Hatchell), his son (Christopher Hatchell), his brother (Neal Hatchell), his sister (Glynnie Franchini), and his brother in law (Gene Franchini).
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Dottie Hatchell; two sons, Trevor Hatchell (Erica) and Sam Hatchell (Lisa); four grandchildren, Tess Hatchell, Sutton Hatchell, Cole Hatchell, Luke Hatchell; a brother Jeff Hatchell, and a host of extended family and friends.
Mike will be missed dearly by his family and friends! His life and legacy will be commemorated in a Memorial Service at Heights Christian Church, 6935 Comanche Rd NE, Albuquerque, NM on August 7, 2024 at 11:00 am. Graveside service will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet guests at 10:30 am prior to the Memorial service.
