John Steenson

March 7, 1948 — October 27, 2025

John Paul Steenson passed away at home on October 27, 2025, at the age of 77, following a long illness. He was born in Hammond, Indiana, to John and Emma (Benyei) Steenson. John graduated from Hammond Vocational School and attended Purdue Lake County Extension. In 1971, he relocated to Albuquerque.

John was preceded in death by his parents and sister Jacqueline Vargo. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sherri, as well as his daughters, Kelly Baughman and Kory Baughman, and grandchildren, Logan and Parker Hague. Also surviving are brother-in-law, Joe Vargo; sister-in-law Connie Buckley; cousin, Jennifer Tucker; nieces Kathy Vargo, Debbie Corti (Tim), Kim Marzavas (Tom); nephews Nick Buckley (Natalie), Scott Buckley (Katie), great nephews Sam Marzavas, Carson Buckley (Syd), Andrew Buckley, Ethan Buckley, Lincoln Buckley; great nieces Lyla Buckley, Emery Buckley and great, great niece Everly Buckley and many other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Also surviving is Beau, his very special canine friend.

John had a thirty-year career in communications, beginning at Indiana Bell and ending with his retirement from US West in Denver, Colorado. We talked about some of the things John considered highlights of his life. Being a grandfather was at the top of the list. Also, every year, he looked forward to the September fishing trip to Rand, Colorado, with his buddies. The opportunity to work in Europe before he retired, along with the special friendships he formed there, were also on his list. John loved to build, fix, and restore. He was happiest when he had a project.

A special thank you to Ambercare for being there in our time of need.

It was John's wish that a celebration of his life be held at a later date.
