John Singer

August 9, 1940 — August 26, 2025

John Bernard Singer Jr., 85, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on Tuesday evening, August 26, 2025. Born on August 9, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the beloved son of John Bernard Singer and Eleanor (Welenc) Singer.

John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Carol Marie (Demko) Singer; his cherished daughter, Carrie Lynn Slad (George William); and his two grandsons, George Paul and Conrad Otto, who brought him great joy. He is also survived by his nieces, Donna and Christine Stromska, as well as many cousins. John was preceded in death by his dear sister, Dolores (Singer) Stromska, and his nephew, Daniel P. Stromska.

John received his early education at St. Joseph Catholic School and graduated from De La Salle Institute in 1958. He went on to attend the University of Illinois at Navy Pier and later Loyola University Chicago. In 1962, John was drafted into the United States Army, where he proudly served as a Specialist Four until his honorable discharge in 1965.

He began his professional career at the First National Bank of Chicago in the early 1970s, where he met the love of his life, Carol. They were married on January 9, 1977, and made their home in Merrionette Park, Illinois. Together they raised their daughter and built a life filled with love, family, and shared experiences. In 1986, John accepted a position in the Employee Benefits group at LaSalle National Bank, where he worked until his retirement in 1991.

John treasured time spent with family—especially holidays, celebrations, and outings with his nieces and nephew. He loved attending summer festivals and live performances, and he deeply enjoyed being part of a close-knit family.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, John was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and college basketball, particularly the DePaul Blue Demons and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He also had a deep affection for dogs, especially Old English Sheepdogs—he and Carol shared their home with six over the years.

Following retirement, John and Carol relocated to the Southwest, eventually settling in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, to be closer to their daughter and grandsons. He embraced this new chapter with the same warmth, humor, and gentleness that defined his life.

John will be remembered for his kind heart, steadfast faith, and unwavering love for his family. His memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
