John D. Herrera

April 28, 1944 — October 2, 2024

John D. Herrera was born on April 28, 1944, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and passed away peacefully at the age of 80 on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at home with his wife and daughters by his side.

He is predeceased by his parents, Juan De Dios and Soila Nolasco Herrera. John is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Dolores H. Herrera; and his cherished daughters, Janelle Perez (David) and Zoila Smith (David). He was a proud grandfather to Brandon and Aidan Perez, and Bella and Kyler Smith. He is also survived by his sister, Terri Sanchez, and his brother, Sisto Herrera (Barbara); along with many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly.

He graduated from St. Mary's High School. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Albuquerque and his master's degree from Highlands University. John loved teaching and was a counselor for the Albuquerque Public Schools, and a nonprofit Christian counseling center. He was a passionate coach for cross country and track and field. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and previously Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

John was and will always be loved by his family. He had a one-of-a-kind sense of humor and always brought a warm spunk into the lives of his grandchildren. His legacy lives on in endless heartfelt memories.

A celebration of John's life will be held Tuesday, October 15, 2024, 8:30 a.m., at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco Dr. SW. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
