Joe A. Chavez, known by his loved ones as Al, age 93, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 2, 2026.
Al was born in Albuquerque, NM on Sunday, August 14, 1932. He lived in Albuquerque most of his life. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean war and spent time in both Germany and Korea. Al married his wife, Trinnie, on Valentines Day, 1960. They enjoyed a very happy life together for over 63 years, until Trinnie's passing in September of 2023. He had a successful career of 36 years in Business Management at Sandia National Laboratories. Al was a true patriot, and loved his family and country above all things. He enjoyed camping, gardening, and working around the house. He was an avid Lobo fan and loved golfing with his friends.
He is survived by his children, Charles Chavez and wife, Sherylea of Seattle, WA; Elizabeth Johnson of Albuquerque, NM; Kathryn Chavez of Ravenna, OH; Julianne Barry and husband, Neil of Cleveland, OH; and honorary son Peter Hays and wife, Kate of Houston, TX; as well as his grandchildren, Jodi Williams and husband, Brandon; Lindsey Marlowe and partner, Cody; Danielle Jaramillo and husband, AJ; Shane Chavez-Zottnick and fiancé, Emily; Grace Barry and husband, Alex; Emma Barry; and his great-grandsons, Oliver, Grey, and Roman. He also leaves behind cherished cousins, nieces, nephews, and other close family and friends. Al loved his family unconditionally.
A private ceremony will be held at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Al's favorite charity, St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Online Donations - St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
