Jerry T. Montoya, age 55, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026. Known affectionately by many as Jer, Bone, Little Jer, and Jer Bear, he will be remembered for his devotion to family, his unwavering honesty, and his vibrant and creative spirit.
Born on January 27, 1970, in Albuquerque to Jerry and Betty Montoya, Jerry grew up surrounded by strong family values and a love for the outdoors - qualities that defined his life. From an early age, Jerry demonstrated an incredible work ethic. He began his career at JB Henderson while still in high school, working his way from laborer to superintendent and functioning in every aspect of construction from pouring concrete to installing clean room equipment. His dedication and talent later led him to multiple opportunities at Intel, Los Alamos Laboratories and Sandia National Laboratories serving in a variety of capacities including Construction Manager, Architectural/Civil/Structural/Infrastructure inspector, Building Manager and Operations Technologists. Jerry's professional life was marked by a commitment to excellence.
Outside of work, Jerry's passions were just as meaningful. He was a true connoisseur of fly fishing, an avid hunter and traveler, and a master with the smoker-his culinary creations were legendary among family and friends. Yet, of all his accomplishments, Jerry was most proud of the close bond he shared with his children and grandchildren. Family was, without question, his greatest joy and his proudest achievement.
Although these last five years, after being diagnosed with colon cancer, had been full of ups and downs, Jerry continued to overcome through his positive relentlessness, supported by the extraordinary love that was exhibited by family and friends.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Tracy; his son and daughter-in-law, JP and Brianna Montoya; daughter and son-in-law, Amber and Caleb Whetsell; and grandchildren, Harper, Beau, JJ and Lainey. He was preceded in death by his parents, Betty and Jerry F. Montoya, and his grandmother, Anna Trujillo.
The family deeply appreciates all the love and support received during this difficult time. It is a true reflection of how loved Jerry was and how profoundly he touched the lives of everyone who knew him.
