On Wednesday, June 14, 2023, Jerry Frank Montoya was reunited with his late grandfather, Hipolito Montoya; grandmother, Genoveva Montoya; mother, Nora Montoya; father, Paul Montoya and wife Betty Montoya. Jerry grew up in Albuquerque's North Valley, living with his grandparents, attending Stronghurst Elementary and Garfield Junior High. He later joined the Army, serving 4 years during the Vietnam War. After his return, he would spend weekends cruising down Central in his 1968 Chevelle. It was during that time he met his bride and love of his life, Betty Montoya. For 35 years they shared beautiful life memories until her passing in 2004. Jerry later found companionship with Sandy Chavez, a schoolmate from junior high. Jerry was an experienced carpenter, superintendent and estimator, working for JB Henderson Construction for most of his career. Jerry had a profound impact on all those who crossed his path. He was generous, kind and loving. He was so very proud of his legacy. He committed time to all of his children and grandchildren, touting a smile every time he talked about them.
Grandpa Jerry will be immensely missed by his immediate family, oldest son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Tracy Montoya; youngest son, Mike Montoya; grandchildren, JP and Brianna Montoya, Amber and Caleb Whetsell, Mikaela Montoya, Lizzie Montoya; and great-grandchild Harper Montoya. Additionally, Jerry's father-in-law, Ted Trujillo; brothers and sisters (Arnold Montoya, Herman Montoya, Thelma West, Terri Montoya, Anthony Montoya and Amy Montoya) brother and sister in-laws (Ted and Dolores Trujillo, Ace and Elena Trujillo, Jeanette and Barney Baca, Fuzz and Ana Trujillo, Joann and Rick Wright, May and Dennis Kearns) and their extended families will remember Jerry as the brother and uncle they could always count on.
A special thanks to the VA In-Patient staff (5D, cardiology, hospice team) and providers that exhibited compassion, creativity, and flexibility during Jerry's extended stay as well as Jerry's primary and cardiac doctors who knew him personally and cared for his health and wellness. Additionally, we are so grateful to the staff at Hospice of NM, their kindness and support helped the family be at ease during Jerry's final days with us on earth.
