Britton, Jerrel Duane, 79, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2016, surrounded by family.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Josie Britton; his son, Darrel Britton; his daughters, Cheryl Sanders and husband Terry, Carol Wood and husband John, and Sabrina Goettker and husband Chris; his grandchildren, D.J. Britton-Sanders, Randal Britton and wife Olivia, Roxy Britton and fiancé Jacob, Gabe Britton and wife Alec, Josh Wood and wife Kathryn, Nicole Wood, Ray Gabaldon and wife Brianne and Katrina Goettker; and 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Terry and Jed Britton; and sisters Nancy Vaughn, Kathy Kowaleski, Carol Price and Beth Witt; and many loving cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife Dorothy Britton, grandson Mick Gabaldon and daughter-in-law Debbie Britton.
Jerry was born in Arrey, New Mexico in 1936, the son of Irma Britton Eager and Charles Taylor Britton, and raised in Oklahoma. He returned to New Mexico after graduating high school, and served his community, first in the United States Air Force, followed by a career with the Albuquerque Police Department (1963-1983).
He enjoyed working on various projects with his lifelong friend, Elbert Elliott. Projects included carpentry, guitar making and car restoration. He also enjoyed monthly dinners at Teofilo's with Elbert and Monty Monteith.
A friend from Zuni told us that the Zuni believe that when it rains when someone passes, the ones that have gone ahead of the one who is passing, come and welcome him. It is a good passing. It poured rain on the day Jerry passed.
Honorary pallbearers are Jerry's grandchildren.
At his request, a small private service has been arranged, with private burial to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
