Janice Goodman was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1929 to Anna Weinstein Kahn and Lewis Kahn. She grew up in Jamaica, Queens, where she began a lifelong love of learning and music. Janice attended PS131 and later graduated from the Kew Forest School in Forest Hills. Her early academic journey continued at Russell Sage College until a skiing accident redirected her plans.
She attended summer school at the University of Michigan, where she decided to transfer and ultimately earned her degree in Psychology in 1951. It was during another summer at Michigan that she met Edward Spiegel, whom she married that same year. The couple settled in the Oakland/Piedmont area of California, where they raised three children: Deborah, Bob, and Jeff.
In 1965, Janice moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, when she married Albert Goodman. She pursued a master's degree in Speech Pathology at the University of New Mexico, graduating in 1970. Her professional career included opening a supervised private practice to earn her license and later working for Albuquerque Public Schools, where she served with dedication until her retirement in the early 2000s.
Music was a constant thread throughout Janice's life. She began voice lessons at age 11 and continued singing throughout adulthood. She was a soloist at the First Congregational Church in Oakland and later a devoted member of the Temple Albert choir in Albuquerque for 29 years.
Janice will be remembered for her resilience, intellect, warmth, and unwavering passion for both helping others and sharing music. She is survived by her three children-Deborah, Bob, and Jeff Spiegel-and a legacy of lives enriched by her voice, her care, and her love.
