James Robert Connolly

James Robert Connolly, a longtime Albuquerque resident, geologist, research scientist, and quietly curious observer of the natural world, died peacefully on September 21, 2026. He was 79.

Born in New York City on March 9, 1947, Jim was the son of Walter Francis Connolly and Norma Mitchell Connolly. At age 5, the family moved to Long Island, New York where he graduated from Syosset High School. At age 20, Jim was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam for 3 years. He received an Honorable Discharge.

He then attended Sonoma State University in California where his love of rocks and our amazing planet earth was born. Moving to Albuquerque, he attended graduate school at the University of New Mexico.

Jim spent much of his professional life in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of New Mexico. He earned his master's degree from UNM, focusing his research on the ancient geology of the Tijeras Canyon. From 1986-1991, he was vice-president and president of the Albuquerque Geological Society. He was also instrumental in the acquisition of an X-ray diffraction machine for a new lab for which he was very proud.

But a professional biography captures only one aspect of Jim's life. For over 33 years, he shared his knowledge in collaboration with colleagues and students of all ages. He enjoyed teaching geology classes with the Elder Hostel, as well as with children at the YWCA summer camps.

For over 20 years, Jim was an active member of the NM Men's Wellness organization and of his Men's Support Group where he made lifelong friendships. In his later years, he had the gift of perseverance remaining steadfast in his faith.

Those close to him appreciated his generous heart, his dry sense of humor, his wit, his endless curiosity, his desire to learn, his love of music and travel and taking long walks. In his youth, Jim was an amateur photographer and stamp collector. He and his wife Marta loved their travels to Italy, France, Spain, and Mexico and enjoyed their love of learning. He could often be found reading a good book and later listening to audiobooks. When he became a grandfather it filled his heart with pride and joy!

Jim's connection to New Mexico ran deep. Its mountains, mesas, rocks, and long history were not simply the subjects of his work; they were part of the landscape he called home.

He is survived by his wife, Marta; his daughter, Amanda; his stepdaughters, Yvette and Nicole; his beloved grandchildren, Isabella and Cristian; his brother, John and wife, Reina; his niece, Mary; his nephews, Patrick, Joey, and Luke and their families. As well as by his dog Maya, his faithful companion. He will also be remembered by his former students, colleagues, friends, and the many people whose lives were made richer by knowing him.

A graveside memorial service will be held Monday, October 5, 2026, 11:00 a.m., Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87107 (NE Pavillion Area, Pueblo Esperanza, Plaza A). Afterwards, a reception will take place at the FRENCH - University Reception Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Smile Train.
