Ida M. Chavez passed away courageously on February 8, 2026, at the age of 89. She was born prematurely to Juan and Elvira Pena in a small town near Abiqui, NM on January 13, 1937. Ida was given the name "Patitas de Raton" by her grandfather due to her being so tiny when she was born. Ida was raised in La Madera, NM.

She came to Albuquerque to attend St. Joseph's University after graduating from the Normal School in El Rito, NM.

Ida met and married the love of her life, Wilfred Chavez, in 1958. They had 4 children, Debra, Anthony, Carl, and Yvonne. They shared a passion for camping, traveling, going to Vegas, and playing poker with family and friends. They shared a love of the Catholic Church, St. Therese of the Little Flower where they were engaged in the annual Fiestas entertainment, and Ida was the Finance Counsel President for over 20 years. Ida was employed by the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District as the Purchasing agent for over 30+ years. Ida was a pioneer at that time as a mother who worked outside the home. She strived very hard to balance both her work life and her home life.

Ida and her siblings Orlando (Rose), Dulcie (Tony), Fabian "Ernie" (Sharon), David (Lucy), Peter (Marcella), and Floyd (Elizabeth) were a very tight-knit family. They celebrated special occasions together, Holidays, Birthdays, and everything in between.

Ida enjoyed being a member of Las Amigas de Nuevo Mexico where they traveled the world. She loved playing Bunco with her friends and going to the casino with family and friends. Ida was young at heart, joyful, compassionate, generous, but most of all a peacemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Juan and Elvira Pena; husband, Wilfred; in-laws, Antonio and Amalia Chavez; brother, Orlando; daughter-in-law, Kathy; nephew, David Pena; niece, Renee Larson (Pena) and great-grandson, Luke.

She is survived by her 4 children, Debra Pohl (Donnie), Anthony Chavez (Corina), Carl Chavez (Elena), Yvonne Chavez (Fiancé Frank Tafoya); grandchildren, Sandra Power (Kevin), Chris Lopez (Chelsea), Andres Lopez (Candice), Philip Chavez (Amy), Isaiah Chavez and 10 great- grandchildren.

Ida will always be remembered for her kind heart, good sense of humor, and overall loving nature.

A rosary will be held on Monday, February 23, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., at St. Therese of the Infant Jesus Catholic Church, 3424 4th Street NW - Albuquerque, NM 87107. The Mass will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., at St. Therese of the Infant Jesus Catholic Church, 3424 4th Street NW - Albuquerque, NM 87107, followed by a graveside service at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Albuquerque.
