Horacio “Horace” Papo Garcia changed his address to Heaven peacefully on March 27, 2018 at the age of 85. He was born in Canjilon, NM on March 25, 1933.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernardo and Eufemia Garcia; his wife, Opal Sprunk Garcia for over fifty years, of the family home; sister, Lugarda (Lala) Martinez; brothers, Jose Eugenio (Joe) Garcia Prudencio and Emilio Garcia and all of Canjilon, NM. He is survived by his children, Dolores Garcia Aragon and husband, Dale Carpenter, Ann Maria and son, Carl Gene Garcia, of the family home; his sisters, Julia Gallegos of Espanola, NM and Donna Espinoza and husband, Arthur of Tierra Amarilla, NM; his grandchildren, Christine A. Ortiz and husband Marcos, Anita Aragon and husband, Jeremy and Richard Aragon Jr. and wife, Analodee, Sabrina and Gabriel Archuleta, Richard Aragon III; Jeremy and Aliyah Aragon great grandchildren, all of which he loved so much.
Horace attended and graduated from Tierra Amarilla High School in Northern New Mexico. He also attended and graduated from St. Joseph College on the Rio Grande in Albuquerque, also known as The University of Albuquerque with a BA degree. The colleges name was later changed to the University of Albuquerque. He also enrolled at the graduate school at the University of New Mexico where he earned an MA Degree in Elementary and Bilingual Education. Mr. Garcia was a teacher in both parochial and public schools for over 27 years. He was also employed by the Veterans Hospital for 16 years and was a member of the local Fair Heights Neighborhood Association. Mr. Garcia served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a devoted Christian Catholic and made several religious pilgrimages, namely to the Holy Land, Rome, Mexico City and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City as well as the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. He loved and served the church and loved the Sacraments. He was ordained a permanent Deacon at the Cathedral in Santa Fe. Horace will be greatly missed by family, many friends and relatives, too numerous to mention. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus too.
Visitation will begin at 4:30 p.m. up until the Rosary recited on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, 6:00 p.m. at FRENCH - Lomas. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Lomas and Tennessee, Albuquerque, NM 87108. Interment will follow the Mass at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
