Henry A. Herrera, age 82, a resident of Albuquerque, died Sunday, April 13, 2014. He is survived by his children Kathryn Valdovinos and husband Henrique Valdovinos, Joanne Herrera, Jeanne Herrera and husband Ellery Edwards, Hank Herrera and wife Patricia Mcpheron; grandchildren Karl Hedges, Sara Chavez, Catlin Herrera, Amanda Edwards, Nicholas Edwards; and great granddaughters Isabella Bewley and Aurela Chavez. Henry was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Eva Herrera. He spent 30 years at New York Life Insurance Company caring for generations of friends, families, and businesses across the State, and was inducted as a Hall of Fame Senior Sales Executive in 2013. Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years before retiring at the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross for meritorious service as a C123 navigator in Viet Nam. His distinguished service in the military was surpassed only by his devotion as a husband, father, and grandfather. Henry was devoted to his wife, a constant source of encouragement for his children, and a proud grandfather to his grandchildren who held a very special place in his heart. He was a good man who led a full life, and while we grieve for our loss, we find comfort in the knowledge that, "he has slipped the surly bonds of earth, to dance the skies on laughter-silvered wings." Now, God has a great navigator in heaven. Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Risen Savior Parish, 7701 Wyoming Blvd. NE. Interment with military honors will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
