Greta Dorothy Belling
December 10, 1930 - June 21, 2026
Greta Dorothy Belling was born in Port-of Spain, Trinidad on December 10, 1930, to Hans and Lizette Belling. She had two older brothers, Frank and Dennis, who preceded her in death. Greta's happy childhood was shattered with the passing of her beloved mother in 1942 when Greta was only 11 years old. She often spoke of how this event colored her life.
After the death of her mother, Greta's father sent her to boarding school at the Ursaline Convent in Barbados, where she earned a Cambridge University School Leaving Certificate (equivalent to two years of college) in December of 1947.
After leaving the Ursaline Convent as a student in 1948, Greta followed a close school friend into the formation process of becoming a nun, and began her new life in St. Joseph's Convent on the island of Granada. As a novitiate, she received the religious name of Sister Angela and was directed to pursue a musical education.
In 1957, after almost nine years in the convent, Greta made the decision to leave before taking her final vows. She then went to Puerto Rico and earned certificates in typing and shorthand.
Greta worked as a secretary in Puerto Rico, Spain, and England before being convinced by her brother Dennis to move to the United States. Greta arrived in San Francisco to be close to family and trained to be a legal secretary in the city she loved and called home for almost 25 years. During that time, Greta proudly became a U.S. citizen on March 13, 1973. Although she loved her life in California, she realized she could not afford to retire in San Francisco. Remarkably, at the age of 60, Greta learned to drive and moved to Albuquerque for the next phase of her life.
Greta made many new friends in the Land of Enchantment. She continued to be an avid World Cup fan, a lover of fine books, chocolate, calligraphy, and curated an extensive library of English mystery DVDs. Greta had a talent for making and keeping close friends and was in contact throughout the years with friends from all stages of her life. Greta's Catholic faith remained important to her throughout her life, and she handpicked the church and cemetery where she will be laid to rest. Her melodious Trinidadian accent will be missed by all that had the privilege of knowing Greta.
