Giuseppe Matonti

Giuseppe "Joe" Matonti, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 1, 2023, at the age of 87. He is survived by daughter, Rosa and her husband Eric Montoya, daughter Maria, and grandchildren, AnneMarie Mal and Christopher Mal.

Joe was born in Italy and came to the United States as a professional tailor to work in the garment district of New York. He met his wife Anna at that time. They were married for 58 years before her passing in 2016.

In 1969, he and Anna moved to New Mexico, and he became co-owner of Val-Lu Tailors. When that business closed, he opened his own shop named Joe's Custom Tailors. For years Joe made custom business and western suits, specialty equestrian suits, tuxedos, and topcoats. He also provided alterations and other services. He started as an apprentice tailor at the age of 10 and continued tailoring until the age of 80. Joe could make anyone look great in one of his custom-made suits!

After retiring he focused his time on gardening, being with family and friends, playing bocce, enjoying poker night with his buddies, and hunting for wild mushrooms in the NM wilderness. Joe was a truly kind and compassionate man and was admired by many for his dedication and hard work. He always had a smile on his face and was happy to talk about his love of America with anyone.

A Rosary will be held Thursday, June 8, 2023, at FRENCH - Wyoming at 5:00 p.m., with a viewing to start at 6:00 p.m.
A Mass will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Annunciation Parish, 2621 Vermont St NE - Albuquerque, with interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Casa Angelica in his memory.
