Gilbert proudly served his country as a US Marine, enlisting immediately after graduating from Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School in 1962. He served with the 1st ANGLICO in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in 1966. Following his military service, Gilbert continued to dedicate his life to helping others as a paramedic with the Albuquerque Fire Department, retiring in 1987 with the rank of lieutenant.
Even after retirement, Gilbert's heart for service never waned. He volunteered at the VA, where he found great joy in supporting and visiting with veterans in care. He also played a profound role in the life of his granddaughter, Marissa, who lovingly knew him as "Pa," her father figure and greatest supporter.
Gilbert's deep faith was central to his life. A devout Catholic, he attended Mass regularly and served for many years as an usher and greeter at his parish. His kindness, devotion to family, and service to others leave a lasting legacy.
