Evangeline (Vangie) Varela Jett

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Evangeline (Vangie) Varela Jett, who peacefully passed away on July 22, 2026, after a tragic fall. She was 86 years old. She was born and raised in Albuquerque and was educated at St. Mary's Catholic School.

Vangie was a devoted Catholic whose faith guided her throughout her life. She graduated from Saint Mary's in 1958 and was a faithful member of the class of '58 ladies lunch bunch that gathered monthly for many years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose kindness, strength, and unwavering love touched everyone who knew her.

She shared a life of love and devotion with her husband, Pete (James) Jett. They met in high school and were married 64 years. Together they built a family that was the center of her world.

She is survived by her husband, James Jett; her son, Stephen Jett (Maureen); her daughter, Kathleen Griego (David); her cherished grandsons, Daniel Griego (Alysia) and Matthew Griego; and her great-grandsons, Samuel Griego and twins to be born in September; brothers, Danny (Gloria) and Pat (Terri); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Vangie will be remembered for her compassionate heart, gentle spirit, a steadfast faith and the love she so freely gave to family and friends. Her legacy of kindness, devotion and faith will continue to live through all who know and love her.

A Rosary will be recited Thursday July 30, 2026, 6:00 p.m., at FRENCH - University after visitation at 5:00 p.m. Mass will be Celebrated Friday, July 31, 2026, 11:00 a.m., St. Therese of the Infant Jesus, 3424 4th St. NW, with burial to follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

As we mourn her passing, we also find comfort in our faith, trusting that Vangie has been welcomed into the loving arms of the Lord. We will keep flowers in her home as a reminder of what a gentle soul she was.
