Evan Robert "Gluey" Garrett

May 12, 1990 — May 12, 2025

Albuquerque

Evan Robert "Gluey" Garrett passed away peacefully in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on his 35th birthday, May 12, 2025. He was surrounded by love after a courageous journey with cancer. A vibrant force of creativity, curiosity, and compassion, Evan lived a full and intentional life, one marked by deep connections, artistic flair, and fearless adventure.

Born and raised in Albuquerque, Evan graduated from Albuquerque Academy in 2008. He went on to earn his degree with honors from the University of Chicago in 2012, where his love for literature, theater, and ideas flourished.

Evan's career began in Chicago with both Court and Steppenwolf Theatre. He also joined Manual Cinema, a world-renowned shadow puppet company, where he began exploring the power of storytelling through movement and light. His path then took him to Brooklyn, New York, where he worked in television production, eventually moving to Los Angeles to bring his talents to Netflix.

Evan's artistic passions were boundless. He had a profound love for theater, especially marathon productions-those rare, immersive, all-day experiences. Among his proudest achievements were a 12-hour performance that wove together all the Greek tragedies into one epic narrative and a breathtaking year-long experiment titled Another Consecutive Year of Living, in which he wrote and performed a new play each week. His favorite literary companions included Moby Dick, the works of Shakespeare, and the sprawling landscapes of classic literature.

Evan was an adventurer at heart. He traveled to six continents, studied in France and Greece, and hiked El Camino in Spain. He ran marathons, officiated weddings, and nurtured communities of artists and non-artists alike. Through every endeavor, Evan was a builder-of bridges, stories, friendships, and moments.

He is survived by his loving parents, Pam and Scott Garrett; his brothers, Chris (Si) and Sean (Crystal); and his beloved nephew and nieces: Athens, Roma, Elizabeth, and Kendall Evan. He also leaves behind family members he cherished deeply: Spencer and Nancy, Tisha, Cameryn, Cory, Michelle, Koa, Dakota, Hunter, Ketty, and Aunt Kim.

Loyally, Evan is survived by his precious and perfect cat, Jones, who stayed by his side until the very end.

Evan lived with rare clarity and conviction. In his final days, he reminded those closest to him that although his years were few, he lived a perfect life. He meant it, and those who knew him believed it. His humor, kindness, and spirit left an indelible mark on countless lives across the country.

He leaves behind a vast circle of friends, collaborators, and fellow dreamers who will carry forward his legacy of light, love, and laughter.

Evan's life was a story-brilliantly told, bravely lived, and beautifully finished.

He will be honored with a Celebration of Life at 2pm on Saturday, June 14th at Simms Center for Performing Arts at the Albuquerque Academy, where his great journey began. A reception will follow at the Garrett residence. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Mountain Center or Fusion Theatre-two organizations that helped sow the seeds of Evan's creative and compassionate spirit.
