Ethel J. Johnson

October 21, 1936 — November 18, 2023

Ethel J. Johnson affectionately known as mama and grandma, was born to the loving union of George Washington Morrison and Frances Lucile Morrison in Greenville Alabama. Ethel accepted Christ at an early age and attended St. Paul C.M.E church in Birmingham Alabama. Throughout life’s journey Ethel gave and poured into all children and her community. She leaves behind an exemplary legacy captured by her relationship and covenant with Christ and her family.
Ethel received her formal education from the Birmingham public school system. She attended Alabama State University and graduated with top honors.

Years later Ethel migrated to Chicago Illinois, where she met and married Cornelius Brown Sr. In 1956. To this union five bundles of joy were birthed, Cornelius Brown Jr. La Tanya Renee, Kelvin LaRone and a set of twins Sonia Phylette & Sophia Benette. Ethel was a dutiful mother and grandmother. She spared no expense for her children and grandchildren. She will be remembered for her generous heart, occasional stubbornness, well-spoken verbiage, culinary skills; her ability to always present herself as dressing for success and her perpetual motion.
Ethel has been a long-time resident of Albuquerque. She immersed and gave effortlessly to the children of Southwest Childcare.


On November 18, 2023, smiling gracefully, Ethel made her transition until eternal rest.  She was proceeded in death by daughter Dr. LaTanya Renee Brown- Chotoosingh, son Kelvin LaRone Brown, sister Mary Luealla Dudley and brother Decatur Davis. Those left to cherish her sweet memory include: her beloved children Cornelius Brown Jr, Sonia Brown and Sophia Brown. One sister Rilla George Chambers. Only granddaughter Kiara Torrian Hopson, grandsons Michael Garth Chotoosingh Jr. Ryan Alexander Chotoosingh and Thurman Son Conner III. Son-in-law Michael Chotoosingh Sr. Four great-granddaughters Azari, Ziani, Jiari and Jlani all of Chicago Il.  Sister in-law Ethel Brown, two nieces Twan-Alexis Chambers and Angela Henderson, two nephews Rodney & Jeffery Dudley. Bonus grandson Dernero B R Sanders of Arizona, two Goddaughter’s Adrienne Robinson of Chicago Il and Sytera L Sanders of Arizona. She also leaves behind a host of loving relatives in Birmingham, Alabama and dear friends.
