Epifanio Mendoza, lovingly known as Epi, was born in Morenci, Arizona, and passed away on September 25, 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His life was centered on his faith in Jesus Christ, his family, and a deep commitment to serving others.

Epi devoted 25 years to the City of Albuquerque, including 15 years at the Albuquerque Zoo and 10 years in Facilities Management, before retiring in 2002. He was also highly skilled in the construction trade and was well known for the quality of his work and the many projects he completed throughout his life.

Epi freely shared his knowledge and experience with others. He contributed his skills to projects for churches, nonprofit organizations, families, and those in need while teaching and mentoring others along the way. His judgment was highly respected, and family, friends, and members of the community frequently called upon him for counsel, advice, and practical guidance.

In 2008, Epi became senior pastor of Valley Baptist Church in Rio Communities, where he faithfully served for the remainder of his life. His ministry reached far beyond the walls of the church. He was a preacher who traveled into unreached areas of the Southwest, including reservation communities, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

At the heart of Epi's life was a desire that every person he encountered would come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Whether preaching from the pulpit, working alongside someone on a jobsite, offering counsel, or simply sharing a conversation, his faith shaped the way he lived and served.

Epi was also a gifted storyteller, known for his humor, memorable stories, and ability to bring people together. Over the years, he built a large and deeply connected community around him. He formed lasting friendships wherever he went and became a mentor and father figure to many.

Epi is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Mendoza; his children, Roseanna Lewis and her husband, Felix; Epifanio Mendoza and his wife, Nicky; Cora Colombel and her husband, Jared; Sonya Montoya and her husband, Dominic; and Elizabeth Wright; and his 21 grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Mary, Eva, Sammy, and Paul. He was born to Epifanio M. Mendoza and Rosie S. Mendoza.

Epi leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, service, wisdom, and fellowship. The work of his hands can still be seen, but his greatest legacy lives in the people he loved, taught, counseled, and pointed toward Christ.

Services

A viewing will be held Friday, October 2, 2026, from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. at Tower Road Baptist Church, 601 86th St. SW, Albuquerque, NM 87121. The funeral service will immediately follow from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Burial will take place from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM.

A reception will follow at Tower Road Baptist Church.
