In Loving Memory of Dr. Emmanuel David Atencio
January 13, 1935 - March 25, 2026
"Well done, my good and faithful servant."
Dr. Emmanuel David Atencio entered Heaven on March 25, 2026, surrounded by the love and devotion of his children. Born on January 13, 1935, to Rev. Elias Atencio and Antonia Atencio, he was preceded in death by his parents.
Devoted husband to his soulmate, Elizabeth, for 68 beautiful years, Dr. Atencio's deep love and partnership endured until Elizabeth was called home on July 29, 2023. Their marriage stood as a testament to unwavering commitment and faith.
Dr. Atencio leaves behind a legacy cherished by his children: E. David Atencio (Valerie), Beverly Moya (Patrick), Sandra Scott (Gary), and Arlene Atencio; and grandchildren: E. David III, Jonathan, Gabrielle, Mychelle, and Gary Jr. His family was his greatest source of pride and joy, and he tirelessly supported them in all their pursuits.
A prodigy from an early age, David excelled academically, graduating from Menaul High School at just 15, where he also lent his rich bass voice to the school choir. His intellectual curiosity led him to the University of New Mexico, earning a degree in education by 19. He continued at the same institution, obtaining both a master's degree in special education and a doctorate in bilingual education.
Respected nationally as a speaker, Dr. Atencio traveled the country and Puerto Rico, passionately advocating for migrant education. His work was honored in Louisiana, where he was awarded the title of Col. Aide de Camp. As director of the migrant program at Albuquerque Public Schools, he championed the Hispanic community, leaving an indelible mark through service and leadership until his retirement.
A lifelong servant of God, Dr. Atencio felt his calling at an early age, preaching his first sermon at just 15. He was a pillar in the Christian community, serving as associate pastor with his father at Mt. Calvary Spanish Baptist Church, and later as senior pastor after retiring from APS. His faith was evident not only in his words but in every aspect of his life-a true man of God whose actions spoke volumes.
Dr. Atencio's ministry extended beyond his church. Together with Elizabeth, he hosted a program for many years on TBN, sharing the message of grace and salvation with countless viewers. In 1975, they both served with the Billy Graham Crusade as translators. True to his hospitable spirit they hosted Dr. Graham's team to their first experience of New Mexican cuisine in the reception hall of his church in Barelas.
His dedication was recognized nationally, including his commission to serve on President George W. Bush's Faith-Based Initiative, where he met with and contributed to policies that supported indispensable community and faith-based organizations.
Dr. Atencio garnered many awards and accolades throughout his life, yet what mattered most to him was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, always encouraging those he loved to pursue their dreams with faith and determination.
Dr. Emmanuel David Atencio's life was a tapestry of faith, service, and love. He touched countless lives, leaving a legacy that will continue to inspire generations. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him.
