Edmundo Amos Gonzales, 82, passed away on June 20, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, friendship, and service.
Born on January 25, 1944, in an adobe house on Baca Street in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Edmundo never lost his love for the people and places that shaped him. Although he spent his childhood in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, he was most proud of his roots in El Rito, New Mexico. It was a place he carried with him throughout his life and spoke of often.
Edmundo was many things - a soldier, attorney, public servant, leader, photographer, sailor, cyclist, figure skater, son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend - but above all he was a storyteller. Whether recounting the time he watched Babe Ruth hit a home run, attended General Douglas MacArthur's homecoming parade, sat behind Cher at the Final Four, or told Joe DiMaggio he wanted to be just like him, he always had a story that left listeners smiling, laughing, and asking for another.
He attended St. Francis School in Santa Fe, where he could still point out his classroom window whenever he passed along Paseo de Peralta. He was a proud graduate of New Mexico Military Institute and later earned both a Juris Doctor and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Colorado.
Edmundo served his country honorably as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. His dedication to public service continued throughout his distinguished career as an attorney, senior management leader, community advocate and as a Senior Executive in service to Presidents Clinton and Obama. Of his many accomplishments, he was especially proud of his service in the Obama Administration, where he led the Air Force Wounded Warrior Program (AFW2), helping wounded service members and their families navigate some of life's most difficult challenges.
A lifelong Democrat and proud patriot, Edmundo believed deeply in justice, fairness and equity, opportunity, and the promise of America. He had a great optimism that never failed him, informed by his decades of witnessing it and studying the history of the world. Yes, he read that book - cover to cover.
Photography was his passion and his gift. His eye for capturing the magic of the "golden hour" produced remarkable photographs of family, travel, and everyday moments that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. An iceberg in Antarctica, a lion's face, the sandhill cranes on their yearly pilgrimage through NM, the sunsets on the Sandia Mountains, the quiet of Monument Valley - he signed them all Man del Mundo. He also loved bicycling, sailing, and entertaining family and friends. Many still remember his unforgettable figure-skating performance at Denver's old May D&F ice rink, complete with a surprising and highly memorable salchow ending.
Those who knew Edmundo will remember his generosity of spirit, his unmistakable laugh, his fierce sense of fairness, and his unwavering devotion to family and friends. He loved deeply, gave freely, and never missed an opportunity to make people laugh.
Edmundo is survived by his beloved wife, Katherine Archuleta; his talented and beautiful daughters, Melissa Gonzales and Graciela Gonzales, and their loving husbands Fernando and Travis; his treasured grandson, Elio Amado Gonzales-Branum, who carries his initials EAG; his beloved sister, Juanita; Chela, his Hita Puppy Girl and, the large extended families of Gonzales, Rivera, and Archuletas including his brother and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and primos. He leaves many friends whom he loved deeply. He was preceded in death by his mother, Cordelia; his father, Eloy; and his stepfather, Vince.
For 46 years, Edmundo and Katherine shared a remarkable partnership built on love, laughter, adventure, public service, and his Familia Bombelone as he called them. Together they built a life rich with friendship, purpose, and memories that will continue to sustain those who love them both.
On his last day, Edmundo was talking about going home to El Rito. There were more photographs he wanted to take and a favorite little restaurant he wanted to visit. It was classic Edmundo-always looking forward to the next adventure, the next story, and the next chance to enjoy life. We will remember him that way: camera in hand, devoted to his family, laughing with friends, and forever proud of the New Mexico roots he cherished.
A Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Nativity Catholic Church in Albuquerque on July 1 at 8 am. Military honors and a reception celebrating Edmundo's life will follow at the family home in Corrales. A Celebration of Life will be held later this summer in Denver.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate, a cause that reflected Edmundo's lifelong commitment to those who served our nation.
