Listen to Obituary

Douglas William Sievers was born on January 26, 1947 in Wichita, Kansas and passed away on January 25, 2026 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sheila Hennessy Sievers, who shared countless joyful experiences and cared for him throughout his struggle with Parkinson's disease. Doug will be remembered fondly by his three children and their spouses: Kristina and Robert Lauer of Somerville, MA; Mara and Steve Archambault of Claremont, CA; and Michael and Amanda Sievers of Albuquerque, NM. His four grandchildren-Dominic and Solomon Archambault and Hunter and Harper Sievers-treasure many memories of ice cream, games, fun in the park, and clucks. Doug also lives on in the hearts of his sister Melanie Dunay; her husband, Daniel; and their daughter, Aimee; all of St. Louis, MO; as well as in the hearts of his in-laws, extended family, and longtime friends. He is preceded in death by his dad, Gilbert Sievers; his mom, Martha Christensen Sievers; and his sister Christine "Christy" Sievers; all of St. Louis, MO.

Doug spent his childhood in Shawnee and Chickasha, OK, attended college for two years at Oklahoma State University, then transferred to the University of Texas, where he finished his bachelor's degree and took postgraduate courses. Doug's passion for geology, history, and the great outdoors brought him in 1970 to New Mexico, where he was a seasonal park ranger at El Morro National Monument, following in his father, Gilbert's, footsteps. After Doug earned his teaching credentials, he taught middle school science and social studies in Tohatchi, NM. He met the love of his life, Sheila, in Gallup, early in their teaching careers. Doug retired after teaching for 27 years at Tohatchi Middle School, commuting about 30 miles from the family's home in Gallup, NM, for 17 of those years. In retirement after moving to Albuquerque, NM, Doug took continuing education courses ranging from Spanish to music history, carrying on an insatiable appetite for learning. He also honed his photography skills and became a prolific photographer, capturing incredible photos that were chosen to be published in New Mexico Magazine and El Palacio. He took many beautiful wildlife and travel photos over the years. In 2022, Doug joined the community of Parkinson's fighters at Rock Steady Boxing, where he was known as a cornhole champion.

Doug's brilliant and quiet humor, love, affection, and fatherly advice are dearly missed, but his spirit will be carried forward by family and friends.
