Donald Alan Overholser, 86, affectionately known as Don "O", passed away peacefully in his Albuquerque home on June 6, 2025, with his children at his side. Born in Springfield, Ohio, on August 26, 1938, Don was the beloved son of Robert and Ellen Overholser. In 1942, at the age of four, the Overholser family moved to Albuquerque, where he embarked on a life filled with adventure and camaraderie.
Don's early life was marked by his passion for sports-playing semi-pro basketball and baseball. After graduating from Highland High School in 1956, Don enlisted in the Navy, where, after bravely battling an extended illness, he was medically discharged in late 1957. He returned to Albuquerque, went to work for the gas company and joined the brotherhood at UA Local 412 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union where he began his lifelong career as a plumber/pipefitter.
One of the most significant chapters of his life began in 1961. He then met the love of his life, Sandi, while working on his motorcycle in his garage where he lived, across the street. Their love bloomed quickly and they married on March 9, 1962. Purchasing their first home shortly after, they then spent the next 59 years building a home full of love and cherished memories, welcoming three children: Christopher, Mark, and Lana.
Though life presented its challenges, such as the tragic loss of his son, Mark, at the age of 4 and daughter, Krystene, at birth, Don remained dedicated to his family.
Renowned for his humor, loyalty, kindness, and his MacGyver skills, Don was a beloved figure who found joy in sports, motorcycle and car racing, boating, snowmobiling and hunting. Hot Rods became a passion and sharing that with fellow hot rod enthusiasts became his joy. And well, you never can have enough toys. He definitely worked hard but he also played hard. Above all, he cherished family gatherings and camaraderie with friends. He was always willing to give a helpful hand or useful advice. If he didn't have what you needed, he probably knew someone who did. A lifetime in Albuquerque, he knew someone everywhere he went.
Don's legacy lives on through his son, Chris, and daughter, Lana. His granddaughters, Shelby, Jasah, and Mallory; and his great grandchildren, Cash and Khloe, were the light of his life. All will carry the fondest of memories of their time spent with their "Ampa". His humor, kindness, and unyielding loyalty left an impression on everyone who knew him. He leaves us all with cherished memories.
Don is survived by his son, Chris Overholser; daughter, Lana Harris; and countless friends who became family over the years. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandi; children, Mark and Krystene; and his mother and father, Ellen and Bob.
