Donald Eugene Haviland, 68, of Ruidoso, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026, at his home.

Born May 10, 1957, in Hobbs, New Mexico, Donald was a dedicated educator who found immense fulfillment in teaching. Known for his commitment to his students and his passion for learning, he earned the prestigious title of Teacher of the Year (Bonham Elementary, Midland, Texas), and was nominated for Disney's American Teacher of the Year Award, a testament to the lasting impact he had on many lives. Donald had a warm, encouraging presence in the classroom and a way of making every student feel seen and valued.

A devoted husband, Donald is survived by his spouse, Randall Michaels. He cherished his family and is also survived by his sisters, Gayla Ramey, Sheila Lemond, and Victoria Martin and his brother, Jason Haviland; his brothers-in-law, Max Ramey and Richard Michaels; and his sister-in-law, Louise Michaels. He is also survived by his nephews, Josh Ramey, Justin Brown, and Zachary Haviland, and his nieces, Adison Lowe and Kaitlyn Haviland. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Billy Joe Haviland and Mary Jane Haviland.

Donald was a passionate sports enthusiast, particularly an avid supporter of the Oklahoma Sooners and the Denver Broncos. His love of football was rivaled only by the joy he found in spending time with family and friends, creating countless memorable moments filled with laughter and camaraderie. Those who knew him remember his kindness, his quick sense of humor, and his unwavering spirit.

In accordance with Donald's wishes, a service will be held on Saturday, February 21, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 431 Richmond Place NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Information is available at www.stmarksabq.org.

Donald will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
