David Mathis, age 86, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2025. He is survived by his sister Mary Miller, his brother, Raymond Mathis, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 45 years, Marlene Mathis, his parents, James and Ethel Mathis, and his brother Johnny Mathis.
Mr. Mathis was born in Houston County Alabama September 3, 1938. His family moved to Florida in 1952, where he graduated from Auburndale Senior Highschool before going to Florida State University. He taught 7th and 8th grade health until deciding to join the Navy in 1961.
While in the Navy, he worked as an Administrative Officer, Ground School Instructor, and Navigator, earning the Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. By the time he retired in 1981, he had risen to Lieutenant Commander.
While stationed in Hawaii, he met the love of his life, Marlene Staehlin. They were married October 23, 1969. They enjoyed travel, visiting all 50 states, and taking several cruises. They had several beloved cats through the years, and regularly donated to the Albuquerque Humane Society, and the ASPCA. David was an active member of Kiwanis, volunteering at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. He supported a number of other charities, including, Wounded Warrior, and the Immanual Lutheran Church.
