Dale Schafer, 89, of Albuquerque, NM, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2025. Dale was born on August 22, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, to George H. and Winifred (Maxine) Schafer.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sylvia; his children, Darby, Ken, and Leslie; his siblings, Carol Sue, Merl, and Gary; his seven grandchildren: Tyler, Zane, and Nora (Darby); Kesic and Cadre (Ken); Alisha and Aubrey (Leslie); and two great-grandchildren, Miles and Haley (Tyler).
Dale was a central figure in the auto parts industry in New Mexico, from his time at Teepee Parts Warehouse to later co-owning and operating Don's Auto Parts until his retirement. He was also a pioneer in the Drag Racing community, having built the Albuquerque Dragway in 1963 and later working in various technical inspection roles nationally for the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) well into his seventies.
An always friendly and gregarious person, Dale loved cars, drag racing, model trains, and spending time at his cottage. He will be deeply missed by many.
A Memorial Service will be held at Christ the King Anglican Church on April 16 at 10:00am, with a reception to follow.
