Curtis LeRoy Hansen

April 18, 1933 — October 27, 2023

Honorable Curtis LeRoy Hansen, age 90, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away Friday, October 27, 2023, in Albuquerque, NM. LeRoy was born at the family farmhouse in Audubon County, Iowa to Julius and Ella Hansen on April 18, 1933. LeRoy's remarkable journey began in a humble one-room schoolhouse. He ultimately earned a degree from the University of Iowa in mechanical engineering in 1956. Sandia Corporation brought him to Albuquerque and after a few years in engineering, LeRoy pursued a different career path and graduated from University of New Mexico School of Law in 1961. After 28 years as a trial lawyer, he was nominated by President George H. W. Bush for the United States District Court of New Mexico in 1992 and served 25 years as a United States Federal District Judge. He retired in 2017 at age 84.

In his professional life, LeRoy was known for his embodiment of fairness, intelligence, integrity, and impartiality. On a personal level, his honesty and forthrightness were equally extraordinary. He never shied away from expressing his thoughts, consistently offering considerate and direct guidance, especially to his beloved grandchildren. While LeRoy was celebrated for his wisdom and dry sense of humor, he was equally recognized for his warmth and unwavering support for his family. LeRoy cherished the companionship of his remarkable wife, Ruth, his lifelong friends, and, of course, his treasured grandchildren. LeRoy held a deep passion for skiing, was an enthusiastic fisherman, and, in his later years, enjoyed his quiet walks through the Albuquerque Bosque and in the Taos Ski Valley.

He is survived by wife, Ruth Hansen; daughter, Heather Hansen Gallegos and husband, Tim, Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren, Hannah and Dane; son-in-law, John Ransom, Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren, Max and Ella; sister Carol White, Albuquerque, NM; sister Mary Ann (Craig) Martens, Shawnee Mission, KS; LeRoy was preceded in death by his daughter, Julia Hansen Ransom (2019) and his brother, Gale Hansen (2000).

In accordance with LeRoy's wishes, a small family memorial will be held to celebrate his life. His legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
