Charles Millard Tapp, Ph.D., of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026, at the age of 89.
Born on November 9, 1936, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Millard Tapp Jr. and Lillian Tapp, Charles lived a life defined by intellectual curiosity, integrity, kindness, and an unwavering devotion to his family. He was known for his quiet wit, generous spirit, and lifelong love of learning. Whether researching his family's genealogy, enjoying the thrill of a day on the ski slopes, or immersing himself in the world of theater, Charles embraced life with enthusiasm and a genuine appreciation for the people and experiences around him.
Having earned his Master's and Doctorate in Physics from the University of Virginia, Charles dedicated 33 years of his professional career to Sandia National Laboratories, where he held numerous technical and executive leadership positions in both Livermore, California, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Throughout his career, he was recognized for his integrity, thoughtful leadership, and commitment to excellence. He served in several senior roles, including Director of Development Test, Acting Vice President of Development Support, and Director of Quality Improvement and Primary Studies. Respected throughout his profession, Charles also served as Technical Chairman of the Electronic Components Conference, was a Senior National Examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, a Senior Judge for the New Mexico State Quality Award, a member of the Board of Directors of Quality New Mexico, and an Adjunct Professor at New Mexico State University, where he shared his knowledge and passion for continuous improvement with future generations.
Above all, Charles was devoted to his family. He shared a remarkable love story with his beloved wife, Frances "Fran" Tapp, whose memory remained close to his heart every day after her passing. Their enduring partnership was an inspiration to those who knew them, and his love for her never waned.
Charles is survived by his daughters, Roxane Gelband and her husband, Butch; and Barbara Tapp; his son, Dave Tapp; his grandchildren, Bob and his wife, Megan; Corbin, Lilly, and Max; his great-grandchildren, Josiah, Elias, and Malakai; and his sister, Barbara Inabnit and her husband, Merl. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fran Tapp.
Charles will be remembered for his intellect, storytelling, humor, generosity, wisdom, and love for his family. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the values he lived by, and the memories that will forever be treasured by those who knew and loved him.
In accordance with Charles's wishes, there will be no memorial service or ceremony.
