Carol Summers, a fiercely independent woman whose life was defined by compassion, creativity, and service to others, passed away surrounded by the legacy of love she so carefully stitched into the lives of her family and community.

Raised in upstate New York, Carol devoted much of her professional life to education. She began her career teaching science before discovering a calling in special education, where her patience and determination helped countless students thrive. She believed every child deserved encouragement, dignity, and the opportunity to succeed.

Carol's creative spirit flourished beyond the classroom. A gifted quilter and crocheter, she lovingly crafted heirloom quilts, blankets, and handmade treasures that will remain cherished by her family for generations. Her hands were rarely still, especially when creating baby blankets for the Linus Project while living at Manzano del Sol, where she stayed active and engaged in community life.

She was an avid reader, a devoted lover of dogs, and had been an active member of Civilian International, dedicating time and energy to community service throughout her life.

On the second Earth Day in 1971, Carol met Kelly Summers in Socorro. Their meeting became a lasting partnership grounded in love, resilience, and devotion. Kelly brought five children into the marriage, and Carol embraced the role of mother, mentor, and friend with grace and tenacity. Together they built a large family that grew to include seven children and their partners, 16 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. Carol remained by Kelly's side until his death in 2003.

Though she faced her own health challenges over the years, Carol lived life entirely on her own terms, with determination, common sense, and remarkable strength. She leaves behind a family strengthened by her example, warmed by her creations, and forever grateful for the love she gave so freely.
