In Loving Memory of Betty J. Dominguez

December 28, 1945 - May 18, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Betty J. Dominguez on May 18, 2025. A devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, fierce advocate, and generous friend-Betty lived a beautiful and full life defined by faith, family, and service to others.

Betty was born in Farmington, New Mexico to Cecelian (Bear) Widdowes and Fidela (Valdez) Martinez, and was lovingly raised by her stepfather, Silviano Martinez. She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Joe R. Dominguez; daughters Jolene Dominguez and Deborah Dominguez-Clark; grandchildren Kiersten Root (Christian) and Bryleigh Clark; and her beloved great-grandchildren, Mason and Charlotte. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Brian Clark.

From the very beginning, Betty faced life with courage and determination. Born with a visual impairment, she was raised on the campus of the New Mexico School for the Visually Handicapped (now NMSBVI) in Alamogordo. There, she formed lifelong bonds and found a second family in her fellow students. After graduating early, she attended Western New Mexico University to pursue a degree in education. Betty went on to return to NMSBVI as a teacher and later administrator, dedicating her life to empowering children with visual impairments.

Betty's work was groundbreaking. Alongside her husband, she expanded the school's outreach to Albuquerque and was instrumental in establishing the first full-day preschool and kindergarten programs for visually impaired children in the state of New Mexico. Her passion for education and advocacy left a lasting legacy-one that changed countless lives for the better.

Betty served on numerous boards, authored books, and never ceased advocating for children and adults with disabilities. Her strength, vision, and determination made her a true warrior in her field-and a light for so many.

Family was everything to Betty. She was a proud and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her love language was gift-giving-nothing brought her more joy than surprising friends and family with thoughtful gifts. No one left her presence empty-handed. She adored traveling, was a lifelong Disney fan, and celebrated life's magic with those she loved most.

Betty and Joe shared a love story that began in college and spanned over six decades. They built a beautiful life and business together and remained inseparable throughout their journey. Education was a cornerstone in their home, and Betty inspired everyone around her to pursue knowledge and chase their dreams.

We will forever cherish the laughter, lessons, and memories we shared. Life without her feels immeasurably changed, but we find comfort knowing her guiding spirit remains with us always. She is, and always will be, our inspiration.
