Peacefully and surrounded by her loving family, Bernice passed away in her home at the age of 77. She was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, NM. She is the eldest of 4 siblings and a graduate of Rio Grande High School.
Bernice was a lover of the earth and had a deep appreciation for the natural world and the diversity of human cultures. She was sassy and lived her life on her terms, unapologetically. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the arts, writing, and solving puzzles. Supporting her grandchildren's extracurricular activities brought her immense joy.
Bernice provided 42 years of exemplary service at Kirtland Airforce Base, retiring in 2009 as the Engine Manager for the 58th Special Operations Wing.
Bernice was an active member of our community through decades of tireless volunteer work for numerous organizations, including the Commission For The Blind, Peace Craft, General Lloyd "Fig" Newton Tuskegee Airman Chapter, Women's Global Pathways, PBS, High School Mock Trials, Buffalo Soldiers Society of New Mexico, Office of African American Affairs, Office of Native American Affairs, Friends Of The Third World, The Assistance League Of Albuquerque, and so much more. Bernice earned multiple accolades and awards for her outstanding dedication to our country and community, including recognition from Governor Johnson and Governor Richardson.
Bernice is survived by her children: Gary Maestas (Kathy Hall), Charles Farmer, Senait Fuller (Chester Fuller Jr.); Her grandchildren: Michelle Aguilar, Patricia Whitfield, Isaiah Fuller, Gary Maestas jr., Iyanah Fuller, Chad Carter, Sequoia Parmelee, Donavon Manning, Great grandchildren, Deanna & Amaya Aguilar, Amira Whitfield, Brandon & Chase Carter, Eli & James Parmalee; Her great-great grandson: Edwin Lee Vasquez.
She had other dearly loved "children" Brian Johns, Dee-Dee, Djuana, Carolyn, Donell Cobb, Angela Ricks, Tiffany Johnson and numerous other children who lovingly called her "Grandma".
Bernice is also survived by her dear best friend, Dianne Lenhoff; cousins Margie Castillo, Patricia Sanchez, Ron (Martha) Herrera, Charolette Flynn and many other loved ones.
Bernice lived her life with intent and leaves behind an inspiring legacy of service and boundless love.
Her Celebration of life will be June 11th at 12noon with a lunch reception to follow at French - WYOMING.
