Bernadette McTigue, Bernie as she was known to everyone, passed away on January 7, 2016, just short of 82 years of a wonderful life. She was an active and passionate lady throughout her years. Those who knew her are familiar with her desire to entertain through playing Irish music with local bands and simply to have a good time enjoying life to the fullest. Bernadette was born in The Bronx, NY in 1934 and raised in Malverne, Long Island, NY. As a young woman, she traveled extensively throughout the United States before settling in Albuquerque in 1964 with her husband Tom and their two sons. This family would eventually grow to include five sons. She graduated as registered nurse from Kings County School of Nursing, New York in 1954 and continued to keep her nursing license current until the time of her death. She was active in the community including, volunteering at Popejoy performances, and at local senior centers assisting with health checks, was an avid swimmer, and enjoyed camping and traveling. In her later years she traveled extensively to Hawaii and Ireland where she was "bitten by the Irish bug" and in embracing her Irish heritage, she learned to play the bodhran or Irish drum, the spoons and performing with local Irish groups in Albuquerque. We are certain she would see death as a temporary setback. It simply delays getting to the next show for a little while.
Bernadette is survived by her husband, Tom; sons, (Chris, Leo, Stephen, Mark, and Michael); their spouses (Jennifer, Cheryl, Prina, Hillary, and Erin); grandchildren (Ryan, Dakota, Kyler, Kevin, Sydney, Michael, and Addison); great-grandchildren (Scout and Preston); siblings (Eileen, Kathy, Wynn, and John); sister-in-law (Mary Catherine), their spouses, and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of her Life will be Saturday, January 16, 2016, 9:30 a.m. held at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 833 Arizona Ave SE, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87108 where she was an active member.
