Barbara Mitchell, 84, loving mother and long-time Albuquerque resident, passed away on February 20, 2017, in Ruidoso, New Mexico. Barbara was highly active in the New Mexico art community during the 1960s and 1970s. She specialized in pastel portraiture of people and animals; her work was shown in many juried art shows, including the 1st NM Arts and Crafts Fair and NM State Fair Professional Shows. She presented lectures for various groups, taught classes for all ages, and had years of experience in commissioned pastel portraits from both life and photos. Her works have hung in offices and homes across the country.
She is survived by her children, John L. Mitchell, Michael A. Mitchell and wife Cheryl, Anita and husband, George Oppel, Larry D. Mitchell and wife Rosalita and Anthony P. Mitchell and wife Sheila; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, James Thomason and wife Beverly, and numerous cherished nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Mitchell; her parents, Juanita N. and Lovick D. Thomason; and her great-granddaughter, Annabelle Mae Oppel.
A Funeral Service and Celebration of Barbara's life will take place on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 2903 Cabezon Rd., Rio Rancho, NM, 87124.
