Aubrey White Bogle, III

May 7, 1945 — March 31, 2021

This is a remembrance and celebration of the unique life of Aubrey White Bogle. Aubrey was blessed with an intelligence ignited by his inquisitiveness and curiosity. He approached life with an inspirational wonder of the world around him. Among his many accomplishments in his career were his military service in the Navy during the Viet Nam War, his MA in Economics at Vanderbilt and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Vanderbilt, and his service during the Gulf War. Because of his enduring love of the sea and the allure of being able to practice law and in his words, "Drive a ship", he served in the Coast Guard where he indeed was permitted to do his heart's desire. Aubrey always said, "Any day at sea was a great day". He was an explorer and adventurer at heart and loved his international travels. In his retirement from a decorated career in International Law with the Coast Guard and the Defense Institute of International Law in Newport, Rhode Island, he pursued courses in astronomy and physics. An avid reader, he maintained a steady stream of e-mails with his colleagues on Law of the Seas around the world.

Aubrey had a high sense of responsibility and integrity and was firmly ground in his beliefs of duty, honor, country, coupled with his love of family and the worth of the individual. His service in Viet Nam and in the Gulf War were instrumental in his desire to foster better communications internationally. Aubrey had a generous and loving heart and this goodness was attributed to his parents, Aubrey and Martha Jane Bogle, and the love they showered upon all six of their children. He lived his life as a Christian firmly guided by the Golden Rule. Because of his cheerful countenance, he claimed that Pollyanna paled next to his faith in the future.
