Andrew R. Canessa

September 25, 1930 — July 8, 2017

Andrew R. Canessa of Albuquerque, NM passed away at the age of 86 on July 8, 2017 with his family at his side.

Andrew was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 25, 1930. He is survived by his former spouse and lifetime love, Bernice Zimmer; and five children, Bernadette Ortega, Christina Delgado, Andrew Zimmer, Alicia Zimmer, and Elizabeth Zimmer. He was preceded in death by his youngest child, Veroniz Zimmer and his grandson, Joseph Ortega, Jr. He is also survived by his children’s spouses; plus nine grandchildren and their spouses; and seven great-grandchildren.

Andy was a devoted and beloved father and grandfather and took a committed interest in helping his loved ones through the complexities and challenges of life. He was a tough and sometimes ornery mentor, a world class cheerleader, and a bigger than life figure who was fiery, forceful, stubborn, and gentle all at the same time. He got things done and made no apologies for it.

He was a gifted story teller, a spinner of tales, and had a charm and personality that few could resist. He was a military man, a businessman, a salesman, and an everyman. He couldn’t settle on one thing because he was good at many things.

He had a love for life and for action. He held a special place in his heart for enchiladas, tamales and green chili stew but would eat most any food with vigor. His best and most consistent advice was to follow your heart, to never give up, and to surround one’s self with good people and winners. He had a deep and unconditional respect for our service men and women. He had a disdain for politicians, phonies, and anyone or anything that threatened his children or grandchildren.

Andrew Canessa retired from the United States Army as a First Sergeant after serving nearly 23 years and in that time saved countless military and civilian lives. He was an infantryman, a master paratrooper and a leader of men. He served two tours in the Korean War and three tours in the Vietnam War. He was the recipient of many military honors to include the Silver Star, three Bronze Stars with Valor and the Cross of Gallantry with Palm. He was also a Purple Heart recipient. He was an American Hero and brought great credit upon himself and the United States Army which was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service. He spoke so little of his time defending the country he loved but spoke so highly of those he was so honored to serve with.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, August 3, 2017 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at FRENCH – Wyoming.  A graveside service with full military honors will be held for family and close friends on Friday, August 4, 2017, at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
