Allen Randall Gilmore

Allen R. Gilmore died on August 19, 2018 in Albuquerque, N.M. after a difficult struggle with cancer. Allen moved to the La Vida Llena retirement community in Albuquerque in 2008.Prior to moving to Albuquerque, Allen had visited New Mexico many times, and had grown to love the land, the culture, and the people. At La Vida Llena, he found a true home and many close friends who enriched his life.

Allen was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 3, 1937, and grew up there. He graduated from Baltimore City College High School in 1955 and attended Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), graduating in 1959 with an A.B. in English. He received an M.Div. from Garett-Evangelical Seminary in 1962, and a M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Northwestern University in 1965 and 1967, respectively. He was a Danforth Foundation Chaplain Intern, serving as Assistant Pastor, at Duke University in 1962 – 1963, and was the acting chaplain at Northwestern University in 1966 – 1967.

Upon graduation from Northwestern, Allen accepted a position as a clinical psychologist and pastoral counselor at the not-for-profit Pastoral Counseling and Consultation Centers (PC&CC) in the Washington, DC area. He went on to be the Executive Director of the PC&CC for many years. In 1988 he and his wife Eileen moved to Keene, NY in the Adirondack Mountain region, where he continued work in clinical psychology at the Samaritan Family Counseling Center until 2002. He was an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, and was active in the Keene Valley Congregational Church, 1988 – 2006, and the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Albuquerque from 2008 – 2018.

Allen was politically and socially active from age 14, and was involved in the civil rights movement beginning in the 1960’s. Allen played and coached soccer and baseball throughout hisl life, including playing Division III soccer in college. His last paying job was as an interscholastic baseball coach from 2003 – 2006 at the Keene Central School in Keene, NY.Allen was preceded in death by his wife, of nearly 48 years Eileen. He is survived by son, Mark; daughter-in-law, Marcia and granddaughter, Elizabeth of Albuquerque, and son, Jonathan;daughter-in-law, Erin, and grandchildren, Emma and Joshua, of Rutland, Vermont.

A Memorial Service for Allen will be held on Friday, September 7, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at La Vida Llena, 10501 Lagrima De Oro Rd. N.E. Albuquerque N.M. 87111. Memorials may be sent to the Full Life Foundation at La Vida Llena retirement community, Albuquerque, NM, or the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Albuquerque.
