Alfred A. Valdez, 90, a native of Raton, NM, moved to Albuquerque in 1937. He graduated from AHS in 1946 and received his bachelor’s degree from UNM in 1961. He served three years in the US Army Air Corps. He was a Senior Vice President of Albuquerque Federal where he was employed for 29 years. Al retired from Albuquerque Federal and became self employed as a management consultant for 12 years, focusing on small business and financial institutes. He was Preceded in death by his wife, Toni of 42 years; his parents, Joe and Lucia Valdez; two brothers, Bob and Orlando. He is survived by his son, Mark (Wendy); daughter, Lisa (Lorenzo); grandchildren, Austin, Janae, and Bria plus his great- granddaughter. Al was deeply involved in community activities including Volunteer Leadership in the following organizations:
President- Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce
President- UNM Alumni Association
President- UNM Lobo Club
Chairman- Better Business Bureau of NM
President- Great SW Area Council, Boy Scouts of America
Chairman- Albuquerque Service Clubs Presidents Council
Regional (of 5 states) Vice President- Optimist International
Governor- NM- West Texas District for Optimist International
Al was an Optimist for over 40 years Al received several honors and awards for his dedication to community service:
He was selected Albuquerque’s Outstanding Young Man (1962)
National Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award.
Albuquerque Senior Foundation
Al was deeply involved in Republican politics for over 50 years especially in fundraising. He served as:
State Finance Chairman of NM Republican Party
State Treasurer of the Nevada Republican Party (served two terms)
President of the Nevada Republican Men’s Club
Al and his wife, Toni attended five National Republican Conventions. Special Thanks to his angelic caregivers: Carmen, Luisa, Erica, and Tiffany. Mass will be celebrated at FRENCH - University at 9:00 a.m. Private interment will be at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Barrett House.
