Alfred Lopez, age 80, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico surrounded by deep prayer and faith and in the loving presence of his niece. He passed in the hospital after a courageous battle with pneumonia.
Alfred was born on July 1, 1945, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Jose and Carlota Lopez. As the eldest son, Alfred was the patriarch of the Lopez family, always devoted to caring for his mother, siblings, and his many nieces and nephews. He could best be described as a "softy with a hard shell." Alfred led with discipline, which was sometimes mistaken by others as sternness or fear. But those who truly knew him understood that beneath that shell was a kind, loving soul. He valued respect above all else and disliked conflict, arguments, or speaking poorly of others-especially among family and friends.
Alfred was the beloved son of the late Jose and Carlota Lopez. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Stella Quintana, Dolores Holguin, Mary Salazar, Nellie Ortega, and Chrissie Murillo; and his brother, Gilbert Lopez.
He is survived by his chosen family: his son Pat (Vanesa), and his grandson Joey (Tina) . He also leaves behind his siblings Geneva Martinez (Billy), Priscilla Gallegos (Orlando), and Joann Gunter (Bill).
Beyond time spent with family and friends, Alfred enjoyed simple pleasures-fun days at the casino, watching old westerns, listening to country music, and sharing a special bond with the family dog, Max.
One of Fred's favorite quotes, by Maya Angelou, perfectly reflects how he lived his life and how he treated those he loved: "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Fred made his family and friends feel loved, protected, respected, and deeply valued.
Alfred Lopez was a beautiful soul, a steady hand, and a family anchor. He will forever be remembered by all who blessed to know him and love him.
A Rosary will be held at Our Lady of The Annunciation Parish on January 26, 2026 at 10:00 am, followed by a mass. A Reception will be held at FRENCH-Lomas following the mass.
