Joseph F. Mateju of Albuquerque, NM passed away after a brief illness on October 9, 2018. Joe was born in Cedar Rapids IA on October 18, 1927 to Joseph and Adeline Mateju. Joe devoted his life and professional career to individuals with developmental disabilities. Back in the early 1960’s he got his start in the field by working with children who had multiple needs including developmental disabilities. He assisted them in finding services that would help them achieve a better quality of life. Later, as an administrator for the State of New Mexico, he was instrumental in establishing and supporting group homes in communities throughout the state. He collaborated with ARCA in the early 1970's to open some of ARCA's first community homes. Since his retirement Joe continued to be an advocate and staunch supporter of people with disabilities. He lobbied for equal rights, increased funding and quality services. He continued to support ARCA through his dedication to service on committees, and as a member of the ARCA Board of Directors. Joe traveled extensively and loved to dine. He was passionate supporter of opera (except for an unexplained loathing of Mozart). Joe was devoted to his many dogs over the years spoiling them with many toys and treats. Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Maryanne Przystas and her husband, Hank Przystas, and nephew, Mark Przystas. He is survived by his favorite niece, Jackie Orr and her husband, Dick Orr as well as his equally favorite nephew, Chris Przystas. A Rosary will be recited Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 4020 Lomas Blvd. NE Albuquerque, NM., followed by Mass at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to ARCA or the Animal Humane Society.
