George J. Horton

George J. Horton Jr., age 94, passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2018. George was born on August 4, 1924 to George and Iva May Horton in Des Moines, NM. After graduation from Des Moines High school, he joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the heavy cruiser, USS Deluth during WWII. Upon honorable discharge, George attended Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM receiving a bachelor and master degree in Business Education. In August of 1946, George met the love of his life, Mae Dell Scott. They were married that Christmas and began raising their family of four children. In 1950, he moved his family to Farmington, NM where he taught at Farmington High School and later owned his own insurance agency. In 1964, the family again moved to Albuquerque where he taught at Menaul School. He was later hired by the Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute and retired after 19 years. George enjoyed his retirement, spending his time camping, traveling, and gardening.

George was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mae Dell Horton. He is survived by his children, Carrie Berry of New Braunsfels, TX, George O. Horton and wife, Judy, of Crowley, TX, Betty Johnson of Albuquerque, NM, and Carol Luikens and husband, Jerry, of Rio Rancho, NM; sister, Lee Myrle Cunico of Lake Elsenore, CA; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 17, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at FRENCH - University. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 10:00 a.m., at First Bilingual Baptist Church, 812 Fruit Ave NW, Albuquerque, NM 87102. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
